We’re only three episodes into this season of Severance and it’s already making me feel a little I’d be a good fit for Lumon. What I mean by that is each episode buries itself into my head so that I can think of nothing else. That especially goes for the season’s third episode, “Who Is Alive?” which took all of our main characters on their own unique adventures, each of which added layers upon layers of mystery and intrigue to their lives both inside Lumon and out.
Since the episode jumped between each character almost individually, we’re going to break this down story by story.
Innie Mark and Innie Helly
If you asked a Severance fan after season one what their biggest, most random question about the show is, it would have to do with goats. Why does Lumon have a room full of goats in its office building? This episode didn’t answer that question but it did give us more to the mystery, which was more than welcome.
Innie Mark and Helly are leading a mission to explore the severed floor of Lumon and find out if anyone knows the whereabouts of Ms. Casey—who’s also Gemma, outtie Mark’s thought-to-be-dead wife. They print out “Missing” flyers (somehow without Lumon noticing) and ask the team to walk around the office and see if anyone has seen her. Dylan says he’ll do it later, Irv says he’ll go to Optics and Design, and Mark and Helly try to find the goat room. Which they do, sort of. They find part of it attached to a goat-sized hallway (major Being John Malkovich vibes) which leads to something even more incredible.
Mark and Helly find a massive room filled with rolling, grass-covered hills. This is Mammalians Nurturable, the goat department at Lumon, and it’s led by none other than Brienne of Tarth/Captain Phasma herself, Gwendoline Christie. She sees Mark and Helly and immediately asks if they’re going to kill her, which is a pretty weird question to ask in a workplace. When she realizes that’s not why they are there, they all sit down, but it’s clear she is hiding something. Mark challenges her, asking what she knows about Ms. Casey, and the character loudly rings a cowbell which brings several dozen other employees out.
In a scene that looks like something out of a horror movie, Mark and Helly are surrounded by the sad, disheveled employees of Mammalians Nurturable and it seems very likely something bad is about to happen. That is until Mark wins them over by revealing they think Lumon is lying about Ms. Casey. Turns out, everyone there does know her. They really like her too and vow to not stop Mark and Helly in their quest. The whole thing was that perfect blend of creepy and funny Severance is known for.
Plus, we’ve now seen where the goats go. This room. But to what end and why does the department leader think she might be killed? What do all these other people do there? Why do they think people from Macrodata Refinement have pouches like kangaroos (a detail that calls back to season one’s perceived rivalry between MDR and O&D)? Typical Severance: we learn a tiny bit more about the goats and it just creates a ton of new questions.
Dylan G.
After refusing to help with the search for Ms. Casey, innie Dylan is visited by the creepy child Miss Huang. She brings him to a mysterious room where he’s told he’s being rewarded with an 18-minute visitation event with Gretchen, his outtie’s wife. The two strike up an awkward conversation and it’s simply glorious. This is exactly what we’ve been waiting to see. How someone on the outside who knows and loves these people would react to spending time with an innie. Gretchen cautiously tells Dylan about their family and her disappointment in him. He’s understandably confused but ultimately delighted by the whole thing.
Later, we see Gretchen and her husband, outtie Dylan, at home where he’s watching TV and admits to forgetting some important things with the kids. Clearly, Gretchen may love Dylan but this version of him may just be less lovable than his sweet, innocent innie.
Irving
We didn’t get to see outtie Irv this week, but his innie made a crucial discovery. His task in the search for Ms. Casey brings him back to Optics and Design, Burt’s old department. Once there, he runs into Burt’s old colleague Felicia and the two share a few laughs about him. She then sees one of his drawings and reveals that she knows the dark hallway he remembered seeing painted over and over in his outtie’s apartment (and one he’s begun to recreate now as his innie). She says it’s the Exports Hall and though their department used to make deliveries there, they no longer do so.
Mr. Milchick
Upon arriving at work and encountering some deflated balloons—kind of a stand-in for his current position inside Lumon—Mr. Milchick finds Natalie in his office. She’s there speaking on behalf of the board, who want to thank Milchick for all his work and offer him a present. It’s a set of paintings that were originally of Kier Eagan but have now been reimagined with Kier drawn as a Black man instead. The aim is to make him feel more a part of the team and he says it worked. He lied. Later, we see him hide the paintings in a storage room. Maybe it’s an indication his commitment is Lumon is deteriorating?
Devon and Ricken
Lumon’s off-putting errand girl Natalie does double duty this episode as we also find her in the home of Mark’s sister and brother-in-law, Devon and Ricken. She’s there to pitch Ricken on a new version of his book exclusively for innies, which inflates his already big ego to new heights. The flirting only adds to it. Meanwhile, Devon tells outtie Mark about it and the two laugh. The siblings are working on… something. More on that in a minute.
Harmony
The episode began with a very Fargo-inspired shot of Harmony parked on the side of a snowy road driving in the middle of nowhere. Last we saw her, she was evading Mark and all his Lumon questions. And though she kept on driving, eventually, she turned around.
We see her next back at Lumon in the parking lot waiting to talk to outtie Helly. Seems she’s thought about that new position and has a counter offer. She wants Milchick out and to finish her work with Cold Harbor on the severed floor. Helly thinks she’s being too egotistical but says she’ll let her plead her case to the board. The two walk back toward the building when Harmony has a change of heart. She thinks she’s being lured into some kind of trap and quickly leaves.
This storyline, almost more than the rest, is keeping us riveted. We still have no idea what Harmony’s plan is here, how or why she rose up the ranks in the company, and so much more. We also don’t know what outtie Helly’s intentions are. It feels like the most mysterious storyline on the show so far.
Outtie Mark
And yet, we’ve saved the best for last, just like the episode did. Before the opening credits, we saw Mark timing how long it takes for him to get from his car and into the Lumon elevator. Later, he and his sister are creating a message—”Who is alive?”— that he will try and burn onto his retina for just long enough to give the message to his innie. This is an awful plan that has more than a few holes in it but as he begins training himself he’s jolted out of it by a surprise guest.
It’s Regabhi (Karen Aldridge), who we met last season; she’s the person who tried to help formerly severed employee Petey escape. She tells Mark why his retinal-burn plan isn’t going to work, why reintegration is the only way, and that the process has gotten better since she tried it on Petey. She also drops a piece of knowledge she could only know if it was true: that Mark’s wife is alive inside Lumon. Mark agrees to let her try and reintegrate him.
And that’s how, down in Mark’s basement, Regabhi begins the procedure. We then watch as Mark’s outtie self and innie self start to become one. A act that, if it works, will change everything.
So yeah—”Who Is Alive?” is a mind fuck of an episode of Severence. Each character dove deeper into the mystery of themselves and, thereby, the mysteries of Lumon. We’re only three episodes into a 10-episode season, and we are dying to see what happens next.
