As the recognized inventor of the car, Mercedes-Benz has always been at the forefront of technology. In recent years, the company has shown that it wants to stay there with concept vehicles like the Vision EQXX. While that is a look at the road immediately ahead, this is a look ever further down the road – to decades away. But on the way to that future, Benz is also showing off some of the tech it has coming sooner. Much sooner. And some of it is fascinating.
Benz Sees A Future Full Of Cars
Of course, Benz thinks that the car will be as important to the future as it is today; we’ll just interact with it differently. For that, Mercedes-Benz looks to London, LA, and Shenzhen. In London, it imagines parking being forced underground because of ever-higher building density.
The garages work as transport hubs, with last-mile solutions moving people and cargo with augmented reality experiences following you from car to door and back. Digital signals handle traffic while stairs are designed for flooding.

In Los Angeles, Mercedes-Benz imagines that sprawl is worse than ever. It sees the digitalization of infrastructure as better-handling traffic and parking. Even though it’s more than 15 years away, this look expects half of vehicles to still be gas-powered. The vision pictures carpool lanes replaced by autonomous vehicle lanes, along with somewhat dystopian canopies protecting cyclists and pedestrians from extreme heat and firefighting drones stationed overhead.

There are some impressive electric vehicles on the horizon.
Mercedes-Benz sees the city of Shenzhen, China, moving upward. The race to build to the sky means vertical takeoff vehicles in the air and high-speed trains on the ground. More parks and green spaces to improve air quality and give the megastructure residents a place to inteact with nature and touch the grass. Yes, those are utopian visions of the future, but Benz says they’re part of developing tech now. To get there from here, it is working on new products and technologies.
This Is The Tech Benz Is Preparing Now
Benz is working to add augmented-reality glasses compatibility to its cars, and to let you bring your own device into your car instead of relying on the car to always be up-to-date. When you’re not driving, the tech could help its engineers collaborate on vehicle designs and engineering while working remotely. In the even shorter term, Mercedes says Apple Vision Pro and real-time game engines could let you have a customized in-vehicle interface and controls.

And they could even replace infotainment displays.
Genetically modified bacteria are being used to develop a new silk yarn. These bacteria produce silk proteins that can be spun like natural silk, but the end result is biodegradable, light, and strong. Mercedes has used this for door pockets and handles in the Vision EQXX and Concept CLA Class.
Mercedes is using biotech to create new leather alternatives. A mix of recycled plastic and biomaterials makes fibers. Proteins and biopolymers are added to that to create a material that mimics leather while being recyclable (unlike current solutions) and lower in CO2.
The trouble is that those materials need to live in a car, dealing with 200-degree temperatures, constant abrasion, sunscreen, sweat, disinfectants, and more. They have to deal with all of those for decades, and each material must be able to handle that as well as current products before an automaker can switch.
Mechanically, Benz is looking at taking advantage of regenerative braking to simplify the mechanical brake system in your car. A single brake lives in the electric motor instead of one in each wheel, taking less space and needing less maintenance. Moving the brakes would also help ride comfort by reducing unsprung weight.

Lastly, Benz is researching new solar paint. A layer of solar cells thinner than a hair promises 7,456 miles of driving per year powered by the sun. Benz estimates drivers in Stuttgart could cover 62 percent of their driving this way, while in LA it could generate more than 100 percent of a car’s energy needs. The paint is efficient and needs no rare earths or silicon.
Ignoring the dreamily perfect future of 2040 and looking at the tech Benz is working on now, these are all things the company thinks could work, and they could make vehicles much better in the near term, improving sustainability and the ownership experience at the same time. Mercedes has always been a pioneer, and when the world is ready for the next level, the Three-pointed Star will be there.
